Many of us are walking around claiming we are a good person. Not that you are a bad person or anything. But the truth is Romans 3:10-12 (ESV) says: “None is righteous, no, not one; no one understands; no one seeks for God. All have turned aside; together they have become worthless; no one does well, not even one.” We obtain goodness only through believing in the finished works of Jesus Christ so God’s Holy Spirit dwelling on the inside of us changes us. We are natural born sinners (Psalm 55:5)… Jesus came to save us from Satan’s plan to destroy us through sin. If we are so good then what reason did Jesus come to save us from. “But when people keep on sinning, it shows that they belong to the devil, who has been sinning since the beginning. But the Son of God came to destroy the works of the devil.” (1 John 3:8) Goodness is not characterized by the good things we do or not do. Goodness is measured by how much we resemble Jesus Christ in our conduct and attitudes. Only God is good we cannot take credit for that…any goodness in us comes from God…Let us say instead, God is good and shares His goodness with me. We are wretched if left alone without God’s guidance and Love. God wants us to draw closer to Him so we can be more like Him.
“Why do you call me good?” Jesus asked. “Only God is truly good. Mark 10:18 (NLT). This is a very misunderstood passage. (I believe that Jesus was saying to the man, you must know I’m God since you called me good)
