Provoking One Another

A tranquil heart gives life to the flesh, but envy makes the bones rot. Do nothing from rivalry or conceit but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. You desire and do not have, so you murder. You covet and cannot obtain, so you fight and quarrel. You do not have because you do not ask. You ask and do not receive, because you ask wrongly, to spend it on your passions. Let us not become conceited, provoking one another, envying one another.

Wrath is cruel, anger is overwhelming, but who can stand before jealousy? But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast and be false to the truth. This is not the wisdom that comes down from above but is earthly, unspiritual, (and) demonic.  Surely vexation kills the fool, and jealousy slays the simple. Keep your life free from the love of money, and be content with what you have, for he has said, I will never leave you nor forsake you. So put away all malice and all deceit and hypocrisy and envy and all slander. Like newborn infants, long for the pure spiritual milk, that by it you may grow up into salvation— if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is good.
